France boss Zinedine Zidane has paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo, describing the 41-year-old’s achievements as “exceptional” after years of working alongside him at Real Madrid.
Ronaldo has been the focus of headlines in recent days after leaving Portugal’s preparation camp unhappy with his departure. Zidane did not comment on that incident, instead choosing to reflect on the Portuguese forward’s career and the success they shared in Spain.
“What he has achieved is exceptional,” France manager Zidane said at a news conference.
Zidane worked with Ronaldo at Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018, a period in which the Merengues enjoyed one of the most successful spells in the club’s history.
Under Zidane, Real Madrid won the Champions League in three consecutive seasons, lifting the trophy in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
The former France international said Ronaldo’s contribution had been central to those achievements and expressed his gratitude for having managed him.
“You have to acknowledge his incredible career,” Zidane said. “I was fortunate to have him alongside me because he helped me win exceptional titles.
“Hats off to Cristiano. I have always had great respect for every player, but even more for those with whom I shared the stage. In particular Cristiano, who helped us win so many titles.”
