The 27-year-old aggressive defender has inked fresh terms over extension with the German top division side, with his new deal set to take him through to 2031 at the BayArena

Burkina Faso centre-back Edmond Tapsoba has signed contract extension with Bundesliga club  Bayer Leverkusen, the club have announced.

The hard-tackling defender, who joined up with Die Werkself from Portuguese elite outfit Vitória Guimarães in the summer of 2020, has so far established himself as an integral figure in the setup of the Leverkusen-based club, with such efforts now being rewarded with a long-term deal by the German outfit hierarchy.

A statement over the contract extension of the aggressive rearguard reads: ''Edmond Tapsoba has signed an early extension to his contract with Bayer 04 Leverkusen. With two years left on his current deal, the 27-year-old Burkina Faso international has extended his contract until 30 June 2031. The centre-back joined as a young talent from Portuguese top-flight club Vitoria Guimaraes at the start of 2020.''

The Burkinabe centre-back said of his contract renewal to the club's official website: ''something extraordinary and very emotional. Staying with one club for so long - that doesn’t happen very often in modern professional football. “Bayer 04 Leverkusen has become something special to me, a second home where I’ve made many friends. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together. I’ve had amazing experiences here and been able to celebrate great titles. That’s exactly what we’ll be striving for again in the future.”

Sporting director Simon Rolfes added: ''Over the past six and a half years,  Edmond Tapsoba has become an absolutely key player for our team and one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga, who performs at an international top level. ''He was a pillar of our double-winning team who has made a significant personal contribution to the team’s success and has an incredible influence as a link between all parts of the squad. As one of our most experienced players now, Eddy will continue to lead the way as he build another team capable of titles," continued Rolfes. "This long-term contract signing underlines our big ambitions for the years ahead."

He has so far figured in 41 appearances by scoring 5 and setting up another 3 for Bayer 04 Leverkusen across all contests in this current football campaign.

The Ouagadougou-born native currently boasts of 60 caps with the Burkina Faso national football team at the senior level, with 4 goals to his name.
