Cameroon failed to finish as winners of Group E after being stunned by Niger in their final group game by 1-0 at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran.
Both teams heading into the decider had all qualify to the next stage but focus was on who tops the group as Cameroon needed just a draw whiles Niger had to claim maximum points.
The Intermediate Lions began on a good note and nearly snatched the lead on the 7th minute but Jerome Ngom Mbekeli's strong free kick hit missed the post by inches for a restart.
Subsequently, it turned out to be an even exchange encounter with both teams, attacking with so much intent in search for the opener.
Soumana Hainikoye came so close to grabbing the lead for Niger after controlling beautifully at the edge of the box but his effort was off target. Somehow, that was close!
Another chance for the Ménas after Imarana Dan was put in a one on one situation with just the goalkeeper but couldn't burry the chance.
In the second half, it was initially a boring start from the two countries but settled in the course of the game.
The Nigeriens were given a free kick on the 68th minute. Ousseini Badamassi went for it and struck into the net after his effort deflected off Thomas Bawak.
Cameroon threw more men forward in search for the equalizer with the determination of finishing as the winners of their group.
Niger however, after taking never stood back to defend but still attacked upfield as they looked to doubling their lead and of course seal the win.
It ended 1-0 for Niger who have topped Group E with four points and will face Ghana in the quarter final on Saturday, January 28, 2023.
