Former Black Stars captain and coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor has dismissed speculations linking him with a return to the Black Stars job, insisting his full focus remains on his current role with Gor Mahia.

The 52-year-old, who managed the national team between 2020 and 2021, has recently been mentioned among candidates for the vacant position, but has moved swiftly to clarify his stance.

Speaking after Gor Mahia’s draw against Kariobangi Sharks, Akonnor confirmed there hasn’t been any official contact and that he is even focused on his current job.

He added by stating they will have his full support at the upcoming World Cup.

“I was once the coach of the national team. If there’s a link, it’s not anything negative. It’s not anything bad. It’s good. I’m a Ghanaian. I love my country. I love the national team,” he said.

“I will support them in the World Cup. And that will be it. But for now, my focus is on Gor Mahia.”

CK Akonnor’s comments come at a time Ghana continue their search for a new head coach following the sack of Otto Addo weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Gor Mahia are enjoying an impressive campaign, sitting top of the Kenyan Premier League with 57 points as they close in on a record-extending 22nd league title.
