Former Ghana coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has said he is not interested in returning to lead the Ghana national team, as talk continues over who will take charge ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Akonnor, who previously managed the four time African champions, has been linked with a possible comeback following the dismissal of coach Otto Addo.

But speaking on the issue, the former Asante Kotoko boss made it clear he is focused on his current job and not considering a return.

“I was once the coach of the national team. If there’s a link, it’s not anything negative. It’s not anything bad. It’s good,” he said.

“I’m a Ghanaian. I love my country. I love the national team. I will support them in the World Cup. And that will be it.”

Akonnor is currently in charge of Gor Mahia and said he is happy with his work in Kenya.

“For now, my focus is on Gor Mahia. I am with Gor Mahia. I’m very happy. I’m doing well,” he added.

His comments come at a time when discussions about the future direction of the Black Stars continue, with the Ghana Football Association expected to name a new coach later this month, before the team regroups in May for a friendly against Mexico, followed by a final warm-up match against Wales on June 2.
