German tactician Bruno Labbadia has been appointed as the new head coach of the Nigeria national football team, the Super Eagles, effective immediately.

The 58-year-old takes over from Finidi George, who resigned in June following a disappointing run of results that left the team struggling in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed Labbadia's appointment in a statement released on Tuesday morning. "The Nigeria Football Federation has announced that it has reached an agreement with German tactician Bruno Labbadia to become the Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, Super Eagles," the statement read. Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, the NFF’s General Secretary, added, "The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development sub-committee to appoint Mr. Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles."

Labbadia becomes the 37th head coach of the Super Eagles and is expected to lead the team in the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month.

Nigeria hopes to reverse its fortunes under Labbadia after a challenging period under Finidi George. The new coach's immediate task will be to stabilize the team and guide them through the crucial AFCON qualifiers.
