The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have identified former Black Stars coach Chris Hughton as an ideal candidate for the vacant Super Eagles head coach role.

The Nigeria senior men national team have been without a substantive head coach for weeks now after the jettisoning of Finidi George.

The Nigeria legend stepped in as replacement for Portuguese gaffer Jose Peseiro who left his role after losing to host nation Cote D'Ivoire in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Finidi, who has now taken over Rivers United, started his role very well with a win over sworn rivals Ghana but hasn't since won since in three games, and got his spell shortened after losing to Benin and drawing against South Africa last month in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speculations now has it that, the Nigerian FA have been in advanced negotiations with the former Brighton manager who per reports has already said yes and is very eager to take over the three-time African champions.

Nigeria are currently occupying the fifth spot in Group C of the qualifiers with 3 points and will get to know of their 2025 AFCON qualifiers opponents today.

Chris Hughton last active job was with the Black Stars where he led them to a group stage exit at the 2023 AFCON early this year.
