The German-born Ghanaian stalwart has spent four seasons with the Billy Goats since his move from Holstein Kiel in 2019.
In August 2020, Schindler was loaned to Hannover 96 for the 2020/21 season.
The 29-year-old featured in 70 games, netting two goals and hammering nine assists during his time frame at FC Köln.
A contract extension between the player and the club had been thought to have been agreed in recent days but Schindler decided to pull the plug from the deal today (Monday) to enable him to explore new footballing career opportunities elsewhere.
In March this year, Schindler was called up by the Ghana national team for a set of 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches whereas he made his debut.
