Ghanaian midfielder Emmanuel Essiam has joined Belgian second-tier side Royals Francs Borains on loan from Swiss club FC Basel for the 2025/26 season.
The 21-year-old, part of Ghana’s 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations-winning squad, has found opportunities limited in Switzerland since moving to Basel in 2022. His switch to Belgium offers a chance to revive his career and gain regular minutes.
Francs Borains sporting director Laurent D’Affnay said the club had long admired the midfielder and was confident he could bolster their push this season.
“We’ve been following him for a long time. He’s powerful and has a lot of play. Lacking playing time at FC Basel, he quickly embraced our project. We are convinced he will help us achieve our goals,” D’Affnay said.
Essiam, noted for his ball-winning ability and physical style, said he was drawn to the club’s project and is determined to make the most of the loan spell.
“I liked the club’s project. I spoke with the director and the coach, and everything seemed to match my ambitions. I’m here to reach my full potential, both individually and with the team,” the former Berekum Chelsea midfielder stated after signing.
Essiam will now turn his focus to adapting quickly to Belgian football as Francs Borains prepare for what they hope will be a breakthrough season in the Challenger Pro League.
