The English-born defender of Ghanaian descent has earned praise from the Italian tactician after an incredible display for Chelsea in the English Premier League opener at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has lauded the qualities of young centre-back Josh Acheampong for his performance in their draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

Acheampong was handed a starting berth to pair with Trevoh Chalobah in the central defence of the Blues following the unavailability of Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo due to injuries ahead of the fixture.

The 19-year-old was outstanding for the reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions, lasting the full throttle of the match, and his output has earned him praise from the Chelsea manager.

Enzo Marseca applauded the teenage defender for dealing with the Crystal Palace attackers, notably Frenchman Jean-Philippe Mateta, for the entire duration of the match.

Speaking on Acheampong's performance to the media after the game, Maresca said, "Very good, very good. We already showed some confidence with Josh [Acheampong] last season. He dealt well with Mateta, and overall he had a good game."

The London-born man of Ghanaian heritage has attracted interest from several clubs in the Premier League, including Manchester City, West Ham United, Newcastle United, AFC Bournemouth, and others, for a possible transfer swoop this summer.

However, Chelsea has said he's not for sale, as they prioritise him as part of the club's future and will only sanction a loan for the highly rated 19-year-old, who they see as the "next John Terry".

His contract with Chelsea will be expiring in the summer of 2029 after being rewarded with a five-year contract last year, and he has so far made six Premier League appearances for the club.

Acheampong, who was born in England to Ghanaian parents, is eligible to represent Ghana at the international level despite playing for the England U16, U17, U18, U19 and U20 teams.
