The German giants have announced the capturing of the 21-year-old winger of Ghanaian descent on a long-term contract from the Dutch outfit in this ongoing transfer window
German-born Ghanaian winger Ernest Poku has joined Bundesliga heavyweights Bayer Leverkusen from Dutch Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar on a five-year contract, the club have confirmed.
The versatile youngster joins the BayArena campaigners after passing his mandatory medical examinations earlier on ahead of the start of the new football season.
''Bayer 04 Leverkusen have signed the Netherlands U21 international Ernest Poku. The winger has joined the Werkself from the top-flight Dutch side AZ Alkmaar on a contract to 30 June 2030,'' an official statement read.
Opoku told his club's official media right after putting pen to paper on the deal : ''Now I can hardly wait to join Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. It’s a big club, a Champions League club! I’m happy Bayer 04 have given me this chance.”
Sporting director Simon Rolfes added: ''Ernest Poku is a brilliant winger who can give us something special up front with his pace and dribbling ability. He is tricky and assertive and with his tempo and his dynamism Ernest enormously extends our possibilities on the pitch.”
Given his Ghanaian heritage, the Hamburg-born winger still remains eligible to play for Ghana on the international stage having played for The Netherlands national youth teams.
