The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has relieved Desmond Ofei from his role as the head coach of the Black Satellites as part of the technical restructuring strategy of the country's football governing body.

Ofei, who has been the head coach of the Ghana U20 team since 2023, has been reassigned to focus on his assistantship position at the Black Stars.

In January 2025, the 37-year-old was appointed to join Otto Addo's backroom staff as deputy coach following the sacking of Joseph Laumann after Ghana's failure to secure a qualification to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations slated to be played in Morocco next year.

According to the GFA's statement, Ofei will be focusing exclusively on the Black Stars as assistant coach after leading the Satellites to the upcoming WAFU A & B U20 Championships, and a substantive coach will be appointed to take over the Ghana U20 coaching duties.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announces key coaching reassignments aimed at strengthening focus and optimising performance across selected national teams. These decisions form part of a broader technical restructuring strategy designed to streamline roles and eliminate scheduling conflicts across the national team calendar,” the statement read.

“Coach Desmond Ofei, who currently doubles as Head Coach of the Black Satellites as well as Assistant Coach to Black Stars Head Coach Otto Addo, will focus exclusively on the Black Stars after leading the Satellites to the upcoming WAFU A & B U20 Championships.”

The UEFA A licensed tactician guided the Black Satellites to 2023 Africa Games glory and secured a qualification to the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations.

However, Ofei failed to hand Ghana a ticket to the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup after suffering a quarter-final elimination following a penalty shootout loss to host nation Egypt.

He is a former U-18 head coach and U-21 coach at Royal Antwerp FC. He is also a former Lokeren U-21 and Lusitano SAD head coach.

Ofei has coaching and scouting experience in Belgium, England, Holland, France, Portugal, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa.
