Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has explained the role played by Desmond Ofei in the Black Stars’ technical team.
Ofei joined Otto Addo’s coaching setup before the 2026 World Cup qualifiers resumed, after working with the Black Satellites, who reached the quarter-finals of the U-20 AFCON in Egypt.
Speaking on Sporty FM, Asante Twum said Ofei plays an important role during matches by closely studying the game and spotting small details.
“Desmond [Ofei] is more like a game reader or an analyst,” he said. “He sits on the bench and picks up some of the petty things that his boss (Otto Addo) may not have picked up.”
Asante Twum added that Ofei is also heavily involved in set-piece planning during training and matches.
“When they are preparing for set pieces during training, he does it with Gregory. When we are defending set pieces, Otto takes a seat and Desmond comes in. When we are attacking, Gregory comes in, and when they see him, they know what to do.”
He pointed to improved results as proof of the impact of the technical changes.
“In the last five games of the qualifiers, after the technical changes, we scored more goals from set pieces. It’s because of these combinations that joined.”
Ghanaians will be hoping the Black Stars’ technical team can take the team to the next level when the 2026 World Cup begins.
The Black Stars is expected to regroup in March for an international friendly against Germany in Stuttgart.
