The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially announced Sunday, August 31, 2025, as the date for the 2025 Champion of Champions match—the ceremonial curtain-raiser for the new football season.

The eagerly anticipated encounter will see Ghana Premier League champions Gold Stars take on MTN FA Cup winners Asante Kotoko for the first major silverware of the 2025/26 season. The one-off match will mark the official kickoff of the new league campaign.

Per Article 9 of the Premier League Regulations, the Champion of Champions pits the previous season’s league winners against the FA Cup holders in a battle for supremacy and early bragging rights.

Gold Stars will be making their debut appearance in the fixture after securing their maiden top-flight title in the just-ended 2024/25 season—a historic achievement for the Bibiani-based club.

Asante Kotoko, Ghana’s most successful club, earned their spot after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Golden Kick FC in the 2025 MTN FA Cup final, claiming their 10th FA Cup title and capping off a turbulent but successful campaign.

The Champion of Champions match has traditionally served as a thrilling prelude to the domestic season, offering fans a taste of the competition and intensity to come.

Last year’s edition saw FC Samartex 1996 defeat Nsoatreman FC 1-0 at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa—a contest remembered for its drama and spirited performance.

This year’s showdown between Gold Stars and Asante Kotoko promises fireworks, with both sides eager to lay down a marker ahead of a demanding season domestically and in continental competitions.
