The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have agreed to restructure the country’s youth football development pathway, including the appointment of a technical head to oversee the U15, U17 and U20 national teams.

The decision was reached at a meeting on October 2, 2026, following concerns about the performance of Ghana’s national teams, particularly the Black Stars’ poor start to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Under the proposed arrangement, the technical head will coordinate the development of the three youth national teams, with each side expected to have its own dedicated technical team to support player progression.

The meeting also agreed that U18 and U19 competitions will be put on hold after the completion of ongoing competitions at those levels, allowing for an orderly transition to the new development structure.

The reforms are intended to establish a clearer pathway for young players and improve their progression through the national youth teams towards the senior side.

The GFA will also work with the National Schools and Grassroots Sports programme and football academies to strengthen youth development, league structures and opportunities for emerging players.
