Ransford Mensah’s free-kick hands Hearts of Oak a narrow 1-0 win over Heart of Lions in a very thrilling encounter of the ongoing GHALCA Top 4 tournament at the Legon Stadium.
Liberian attacker Chauncy Freeman had the opportunity to mark his debut for Heart of Lions having joined just couple days ago.
The best chance of the game came on in the 14th minute, there was a big defensive howler at the back for Hearts of Oak but their former conjurer Kwadwo Obeng Jr couldn’t make it count.
With six minutes to half-time, Ransford Mensah opened the scoring account with a sumptuous free-kick from the right hand side of attack. That was a beauty!
Back from recess, the Giant Killers bounced back stronger and nearly scored in the opening fifteen minutes having come off the crossbar and also had one of their efforts dealt with nicely by goalkeeper Shuaib Sharif.
With ten minutes to go, Kwadwo Obeng Jr once again sent a powerful ambitious hit in search of the leveller but was parried away by goalkeeper Shuaib Shariff.
It ended 1-0 for Hearts of Oak after full-time and will face champions Bibiani GoldStars next. Heart of Lions will also face Asante Kotoko, all on Friday, August 22, in the second round of matches.
