Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council Member, Gifty Oware-Mensah, is poised to take up the role of Second Vice President following the approval of a proposal by Congress during its 31st Ordinary Session.

The landmark decision, aimed at boosting gender representation in football governance, comes after FIFA endorsed a proposal to elevate the Women’s Representative on the GFA Executive Council to the Association’s third-highest office. This move ensures a woman occupies a senior leadership position with direct influence over key decision-making in Ghanaian football.

The change aligns with FIFA’s directive for every confederation to have at least one female representative at the executive level, reflecting a wider global push for inclusivity and equity in football administration. Advocates believe Gifty’s new role will strengthen advocacy for the women’s game, enhance grassroots development, and improve support for elite women’s competitions.

At the end of the Congress, Gifty expressed gratitude to members who backed the proposal, even telling one delegate at the entrance, “Thank you for making me vice,” in acknowledgment of her upcoming role.

Her appointment, however, will be officially confirmed during the 2027 GFA elections. Until then, she will continue to serve as an Executive Council Member.

The Congress, attended by about 124 members, also saw 114 delegates vote in favor of extending the GFA presidential term limit to three terms.
