The Official Supporters Union of AshantiGold S.C., led by chairman Awudu Mohammed, has strongly denied any involvement in a letter circulating online that calls for the club’s reinstatement into Ghana’s football leagues.

In a statement to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the group insisted they have no knowledge of such a request, no connection to the individual behind it, and no awareness of any so-called “AshGold FC” recently established in Obuasi. They have urged the public to treat the circulating claims as “nothing but a palpable fallacy.”

AshantiGold’s fall from grace remains fresh in the minds of many in Obuasi. Ahead of the 2022/23 season, the GFA demoted the club to the country’s third tier, effectively ending topflight football in the mining town. The decision also saw the club’s financier, Dr. Kwaku Frimpong — widely known as “Champion” — banned from all football-related activities.

The sanction stemmed from the infamous match-day 34 fixture of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season, when AshantiGold thrashed Inter Allies 7-0 at home. The game drew widespread suspicion and was widely believed to have been fixed.

Despite the controversy, the Miners were allowed to compete in the 2021/22 season, finishing seventh with 47 points. But since then, they have been absent from Ghana’s top division, leaving their passionate supporters starved of elite football.

Recently, a letter surfaced online claiming to represent AshantiGold’s supporters, appealing to the GFA for the club’s return to the Premier League. The document bore the name and signature of one “Sylvester Amo,” purportedly acting as the supporters’ secretary.

However, the official Supporters Union has distanced itself completely, stating they do not know anyone by that name and had no hand in drafting or sending the letter. They also dismissed the existence of any new club called “AshGold FC,” accusing Dr. Frimpong of acting solely in his personal interest.

While the back-and-forth continues, Kickgh.com understands that Obuasi may not have to wait much longer. Reliable sources indicate that football is set to return to the town in the 2025/26 Ghana football season — though it remains to be seen under what name or banner the team will play.
