Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Elloeny Amande has voiced his personal disapproval of a Congress decision to extend the term limits for the presidency and Executive Council from two to three terms.

Speaking after the 31st Ordinary Congress, Amande said 91% of eligible delegates backed the amendment, with only six voting against and three abstaining, despite his objections.

“My position has always been clear; I don’t think this is what we have to do. But 91% of the people present and eligible to vote have voted in favour, so who am I? The people want this, so this is what has to happen,” he said.

Amande, who also serves as CEO of Karela United, said the GFA General Secretary had argued the change was necessary to align with global football governance standards, but he and a small minority found the explanation insufficient. Still, he conceded the decision was part of democratic process.

The amendment means both the GFA President and Executive Council members could serve up to 12 years if re-elected, a move that has sparked mixed reactions in Ghanaian football.

Amande also cautioned against what he called “significant overreach” by the GFA in player contracts, stressing that while the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) should advocate for player welfare, the federation should not dictate contractual terms.

“We can provide guidelines and principles, and even create a pool of lawyers to assist players, but we cannot go into stipulating contracts that employers must use. It’s not done in any industry,” he said.
