Former Kotoko and AshantiGold gaffer, Bashiru Hayford strongly disagrees with those calling for the sacking of Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton and believes he needs more time and will perform great.

The ex- Brighton and Nottingham Forest manager was handed the job early this year as successor for Otto Addo, and was the team's Technical Advisor at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Hughton started well and managed to secure qualification for Ghana to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and also finished as winners of the group.

However, he suffered his first loss in a competitive game last Tuesday against Comoros in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, after he had narrowly edged Madagascar in Kumasi during the weekend.

The poor performance of the senior national team in recent times has seen lots of football fans calling for his jettisoning and believes he isn't fit for the job.

But, experience gaffer Bashiru Hayford holds different opinion and feels Hughton should be given more time to help the team gel and is very optimistic things will get better when that is done.

"The problem with the Black Stars is not the coach, but rather a lack of team work. He should not be fired, but instead should be given a long-term contract."

Chris Hughton is still at post as it stands, and is most likely he will lead the Black Stars to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations slated for early next year in Cote D'Ivoire.
