Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey has pledged a cash reward of $1,000 for each goal scored by Hearts of Oak in their upcoming President’s Cup match, offering a financial boost ahead of the highly anticipated showdown.
The traditional Ghanaian clash, which honors the sitting President, is set to take place this Sunday, with Hearts of Oak facing arch-rivals Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Akweley Ocloo made the announcement during a visit to the Kpobiman training ground of the Phobians, urging the team to rise to the occasion.
“The people from Kumasi are bragging, saying that for every goal scored, they will be given 200 dollars,” Ocloo said. “For Greater Accra, the mayor and the MCE, every goal scored, you will be given 1000 dollars.”
“People are coming from the States to watch. If you don’t beat Kotoko, we are dead. Every goal you score against Kotoko, we will give you $1,000."
"The entire country, even people from the States, are coming for the event, and I am sure you have seen how we made a lot of noise. So if you don’t score, you have killed us," she said serenely.
Hearts of Oak, 2023 President’s Cup winners, will be looking to win the title this year in what is often seen as a symbolic curtain-raiser to the Ghanaian football season. The financial incentive adds extra motivation for the squad, who finished fourth in the Ghana Premier League this year.
