Former Black Queens player and head coach, Mercy Tagoe Quarcoo has thrown her support fully behind the team ahead of their make or break encounter against Tanzania today (Monday), in a decisive group stage fixture at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The match, taking place at Berkane Municipal Stadium, will determine Ghana’s chances of progressing to the knockout stages after a mixed start to the tournament.
Kim Lars Bjorkegren's side must secure all three points to keep their qualification hopes alive, following the 2-0 defeat to defending champions South Africa in their opening game and a pulsating 1-1 draw with Mali in their second game.
Ghana have managed just one point from their first two Group C matches and will have to win or it will be over for them at the continental showpiece
In an interview with CAF Online, the experienced gaffer applauded FIFA and CAF for raising the standard of women football and added that she is very optimistic the Black Queens will secure all three points tonight and advance into the knockout phase
"Women’s football has really come of age and I thank God that FIFA is really pushing hard. CAF is also pushing very hard. All the MAs (Member Associations) are also pushing very hard. Every Ghanaian wants to see Black Queens winning the Cup. I’m a Ghanaian. I want us to win the Cup. And I believe in these girls that we have assembled.”
The game is slated for 19:00GMT (7:00pm) this evening
