Former captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan has stated he is passionate about developing sports, not only football in Ghana.

The Ghana legend is currently spearheading an initiative dubbed All Regional Games festival and trails which is aimed to revive grassroots sports and improve sports development in the country.

Gyan will launch the All Regional Games initiative in July at the Kumasi Baba Yara Stadium. However, the Games' maiden edition will begin in November this year.

According to Gyan the idea to embark on such a project was conceived about a decade ago, and it will feature nine sporting disciplines including football, athletics, volleyball, basketball, tennis, table tennis, long tennis, boxing, e-sports, arm-wrestling and para-sports and will provide Ghana with pole of talents to compete for medals and silverware.

The project requires each region to conduct trials and select its top sportsmen and women, who will then compete against athletes from other regions.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (25 June), Gyan said “I want to help to develop sports in Ghana, not in terms of only football but something beyond football.”

He added, “So that is how I came with the plan, but to execute was a bit of a problem, so I was contemplating till All Regional Games came and they were trying to do something similar, and I gave an idea and they said this is better.”
