Former Black Stars head coach James Kwesi Appiah has identified ex-Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan as the best player he has coached in his career.
Appiah made this declaration during a Q&A session with 3Sports, reflecting on his time with the national team. He worked with Gyan during two separate stints as Black Stars coach: from 2012 to 2014 and again from 2017 to 2020.
Under Appiah’s guidance, Gyan cemented his legacy as Ghana’s all-time leading scorer. A standout moment came in 2013 when Gyan scored twice in a 3-1 victory over Sudan, a performance that further solidified his place in Ghanaian football history.
During the session, Appiah also revealed his favorite stadium, naming the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Now coaching the Sudan national team, Kwasi Appiah recently led them to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, further adding to his coaching accomplishments.
