Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams expresses his readiness to don the Ghanaian jersey at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The Spain-born player made the decision to switch nationalities in June 2022, inspired by a heartfelt conversation with his grandfather.
Tragically, his grandfather passed away a few months after Williams made his debut for the Black Stars. The 29-year-old forward sees participating in the tournament as a fulfillment of his promise to his family.
"It means a lot. It is a promise at the family level. It is something nice for me," Williams stated during a pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Sevilla on Monday.
Reflecting on the significance, he added, "My grandfather passed away last summer, and I know that he would be very excited if I could play in this Africa Cup."
Having already made nine appearances for Ghana and notably scoring the winner in the World Cup qualifiers opener against Madagascar in November, Williams is set to join the Black Stars next week for preparations leading up to the tournament in Ivory Coast.
