Former Hearts of Oak defender Dan Quaye raises concerns about the Black Stars' defense as Ghana gears up for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
The West African powerhouse's recent poor defensive performance, conceding numerous goals in their last four games, prompts Quaye to express disbelief and call for urgent solutions before the tournament kicks off.
In an interview with Footballghana.com, Quaye emphasizes the challenging nature of being in the same group as Egypt, citing the presence of experienced players like Mohamed Salah. He stresses the imperative for Ghana to address defensive vulnerabilities to effectively compete at the continental level.
"Honestly, I’m not happy with our defense, and if we are unable to work on them, it will be difficult for us to contain the likes of Mohammed Salah," Quaye remarks, highlighting the need for immediate attention.
To enhance Ghana's chances at the tournament, Quaye advocates for the inclusion of experienced players like Mubarak Wakaso, Jonathan Mensah, Harrison Afful, and Frank Acheampong. He believes their seasoned expertise can positively impact the team and contribute to a successful campaign.
"Experience is key in everything. To me, there should have been places for Mubarak Wakaso, Jonathan Mensah, Harrison Afful, and Frank Acheampong. They have played to the highest level and have what it takes to deliver with the national team," Quaye asserts.
Ghana, placed in Group B of the 2023 AFCON alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique, faces the challenge of solidifying its defense to compete for the coveted title in Ivory Coast. The Ghana Football Association's decision to relocate the pre-tournament camp to Kumasi reflects an adjustment in plans to optimize preparation.
With a rich history of AFCON success, having won the title four times, most recently in 1982, Ghana aims to overcome past defeats and emerge victorious in the 2023 edition scheduled from Saturday, January 13 to February 11, 2024.
