Former Black Stars coach and captain Charles Kwablan Akonnor has urged the team to show a better performance after their heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria last Friday in Vienna, as they prepare to face Germany later today.

The four-time African champions were outplayed in their first friendly game, losing embarrassingly by 5-1 to Austria, in a result that has raised concerns ahead of their next test.

The current Gor Mahia coach believes the scoreline was too heavy for a side like Ghana and stressed that the players must reflect on their performance, learn from their mistakes and respond strongly.

“We play friendly matches to assess ourselves, but conceding five goals is just too much for a team like Ghana.

“They will have to put up a good show in the upcoming match. Yes, you can lose 1-0, 2-0, 5 was a little bit on the high, and I’m sure the players themselves taking that in; they are all disappointed.

“To play these matches and look at yourself—what you’ve done well, what you haven’t done well. Even if they had won, it doesn’t mean anything. It means that they will have to look at themselves and do well so that when the D-Day comes, which is playing against Panama, you will be ready.”

Ghana will face Germany later this evening at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart, with kickoff scheduled for 18:45 GMT.

The Black Stars will subsequently take on Mexico and Wales in May and June as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
