Accra Hearts of Oak will travel to Germany for an international friendly after clinching the 2025 Democracy Cup, according to the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.
The Phobians secured their first Democracy Cup title with a 1-0 victory over city rivals Great Olympics at the University of Ghana Stadium on Friday. Substitute Kwesi Asmah netted the decisive goal in the 70th minute, sealing the win and redemption for Hearts after their defeat to Asante Kotoko in the inaugural edition in 2024.
Speaking after the final, Mr. Djietror revealed that the tournament’s tradition of rewarding winners with an international showcase fixture would continue this year.
“Definitely Germany. We’ve not ruled out the U.S. because last year we had the winning team playing D.C. United in Washington, D.C. This year, that opportunity still avails us, but we want to have an experience in Europe,” he explained.
The arrangement follows the precedent set in 2024, when Asante Kotoko’s triumph earned them a trip to the United States to face D.C. United. Organisers believe the European fixture will further raise the profile of the Democracy Cup and showcase the strength of Ghanaian club football on the global stage.
The event also featured a lively curtain-raiser, with Parliament’s football team defeating the Judiciary 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, adding extra excitement to the day’s celebration of sport, democracy, and unity.
