Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has insisted that Otto Addo should not remain as head coach of the Black Stars even if the team secures qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 48-year-old tactician, who signed a three-year contract with an additional two-year option upon his reappointment in March 2024, has faced mounting criticism following Ghana’s dismal performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where the team crashed out bottom of their group with just three points from six games.

Despite that setback, Addo has steadied the ship in the World Cup qualifiers, steering Ghana to 19 points after eight games, including a 1-1 draw against Chad and a 1-0 victory over Mali in the recent Matchday 7 and 8 fixtures. The results leave Ghana in a strong position to secure a ticket to the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

But Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu believes the former Borussia Dortmund talent coach lacks the tactical quality to lead Ghana on the world stage.

“Even if Otto Addo qualifies us, he is not a good coach to lead us to the World Cup,” he told Wontumi FM.

The Black Stars will complete their qualification campaign in October with decisive fixtures against Central African Republic and Comoros.
