Former National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah says he is disappointed by his suspension but has chosen to remain calm as the controversy surrounding his removal unfolds.

President John Dramani Mahama suspended Ampofo Ankrah on Thursday, October 1, following allegations linked to a visa facilitation arrangement for Ghanaians planning to travel to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The controversy centres on claims that about US$623,000 was received from prospective travellers seeking help with visa applications and travel arrangements for the tournament.

Speaking to JoySports after his suspension, Ampofo Ankrah said he had not been given the chance to fully explain his side of the matter.

“I’m still calm, a bit disappointed,” he said.

“I’m not one to rant and rage. I’m disappointed that I’ve not been heard. It is disappointing that we haven’t been able to have a discussion as to exactly what the situation is.”

Ampofo Ankrah said his attention before his suspension had been firmly on preparations at the Accra Sports Stadium and other NSA facilities ahead of upcoming national assignments.

“I’ve been focused on preparing the facility, Accra Sports Stadium, and other areas around the National Sports Authority to get ready for the Black Stars and other national assignments,” he added.

His suspension comes as preparations continue for Ghana’s national teams and major sporting activities, with the NSA playing a key role in managing the country’s sporting facilities.

Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong has since been appointed Acting Director-General of the NSA following Ampofo Ankrah’s suspension.
