Asante Kotoko SC kicked off their 2024/25 Ghana Premier League campaign with a crucial 1-0 victory against long-time rivals Karela United FC at the Naa Sheriga Sports Centre in Nalerigu.

The win not only gave the Porcupine Warriors their first three points of the season but also ended a frustrating seven-game winless streak against Karela.

The decisive moment came in the 37th minute, when new signing Albert Amoah, making his debut, fired a powerful strike from inside the box.

His shot smashed off the underside of the crossbar, leaving Karela’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Ganiu, with no chance to stop the ball from finding the back of the net. Amoah's goal proved to be the game-winner in this tightly contested match.

Kotoko’s new recruits played a pivotal role in the victory. Congolese defender Samba O’Neil and Sudanese left-back Esmat Abdulhamid, both making their first starts, added much-needed defensive stability.

Meanwhile, Guinean goalkeeper Mohamed Camara, stepping in for Frederick Asare, delivered a standout performance. His crucial saves in the second half thwarted Karela’s attempts to level the score, ensuring Kotoko preserved their narrow lead.

Despite Karela’s increased urgency and improved play after the break, they were unable to break through Kotoko's resilient defense. Camara’s heroics secured a well-earned clean sheet and helped Kotoko begin the season on a high note.

With this hard-fought win, the Porcupine Warriors will look to build momentum as they aim for a successful 2024/25 campaign.
