Asante Kotoko striker Albert Amoah emerged the hero on Saturday after scoring the only goal in their narrow but historic win over Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City Park, earning him the Man of the Match award.

The Porcupine Warriors, who had not secured a victory in Berekum for 15 years, began their 2025/26 Ghana Premier League campaign with determination and resilience. The first half was a tense affair, with both sides cancelling each other out in midfield battles and creating few clear-cut chances.

Kotoko, however, seized the decisive moment in the 80th minute. Midfielder Hubert Gyau, displaying excellent vision, split the Chelsea defence with a precise through-ball to Amoah. The former Great Olympics forward timed his run perfectly, calmly slotting the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper to seal a famous win.

The final 10 minutes saw Kotoko defend with grit and discipline, repelling Chelsea’s late surge to protect their slender lead. The victory not only ended a long-standing winless run at the Golden City Park but also sent a strong message about Kotoko’s intent for the new season.

The result provides a significant morale boost for the Kumasi-based giants as they prepare for their CAF Confederation Cup clash against Nigeria’s Kwara United next weekend at the Accra Sports Stadium.
