Assistant coach Hamza Obeng has apologised to supporters of Asante Kotoko after the club’s surprise defeat to Karela United in the Ghana Premier League.

The Porcupine Warriors travelled to the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium for their Matchday 25 fixture but returned home empty-handed after a 1–0 loss.

Malik Abubakar scored the only goal of the game in the first half to give Karela all three points. Kotoko’s task became harder when Henry Ansu was sent off in the 40th minute, leaving the Porcupine Warriors to play the rest of the match with ten men.

Speaking after the game, Obeng admitted the result was disappointing and apologised to the club’s fans.

“We are down with the result that we had today, but it’s part of the game. We need to take it aside and concentrate on our next game," he said.

“Unfortunately for us, we were not able to put the ball in the back of the net, and we conceded that easy goal at the time we were down by one man. We are sorry for losing this game, but the league title race is not over yet,” Obeng added.

The defeat means Kotoko have now lost three of their last five league matches. Their only win in that period came in a 2–0 victory over Young Apostles FC.

Kotoko currently sit fifth in the league table with 39 points and will next face Nations FC in their upcoming league fixture.
