Eric Bekoe, former player of Asante Kotoko, has shed light on why the team's fans have high expectations for their players in terms of performance and results.
Bekoe, the top scorer of the 2007/08 Ghana Premier League season, revealed that the demanding nature of the fans is rooted in their generosity.
According to Bekoe, Asante Kotoko fans are known for their generosity and support. They don't require financial assistance from the players; instead, they freely give their support. As a result, they have high expectations for the team's performance.
"When it comes to Asante Kotoko, the fans are very generous, and that's why they demand a lot. A Kotoko fan doesn't need money from you; trust me, they always give. They always want to see positive outcomes," Bekoe explained in an interview with Joy Sports.
Recalling his early days at the club, Bekoe shared an interesting conversation he had with Opoku Afriyie, another renowned player for Asante Kotoko. Bekoe sought guidance on how to meet the fans' expectations, to which Afriyie replied, "Hey, we don't just play for Kotoko; we worship it. We proudly write our names in capital letters in Krobea (the annals of Kotoko's history) and then pass it on."
Bekoe's account highlights the deep reverence and passion that surrounds Asante Kotoko, with fans expecting players to embrace and embody the spirit of the club rather than simply fulfilling their on-field duties.
