Black Stars Technical Advisor Winfried Schaefer has thrown his full support behind goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, describing him as the best player in the Ghana Premier League and confirming him as his preferred choice for the national team.
Schaefer, the experienced German tactician, revealed that he has been closely monitoring domestic football, visiting league venues, engaging with coaches, and assessing players as part of efforts to strengthen the Black Stars.
“Over the past two months, I have been visiting league venues and speaking with coaches and players. The best player I have seen is Benjamin Asare, and he is the Black Stars’ first choice goalkeeper,” Schaefer told Medeama FM.
He emphasized that the foundation of Ghanaian football remains in the local league, urging players to recognize the opportunities available at home rather than looking solely to Europe for development.
“The heart of football in Ghana is in the local league, not only with players in Europe,” he said.
Schaefer also challenged home-based players to raise their performance levels if they hope to earn a call-up to the national team.
“I urge all players to work hard if they want to earn a call-up into the Black Stars,” he added.
His remarks underline a growing focus on domestic talent as Ghana prepares for upcoming international competitions, signaling that players excelling in the local league will continue to be considered for national duty.
