Black Stars Technical Advisor Winfried Schaefer has reiterated the importance of domestic football in Ghana, describing the Ghana Premier League (GPL) as the heart of the nation’s football and emphasizing its role in producing talent for the national team.
Speaking to Medeama FM, the experienced German tactician threw his full backing behind goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, whom he described as the best player in the Ghana Premier League and confirmed as his first-choice goalkeeper for the Black Stars.
“Over the past two months, I have been visiting league venues and speaking with coaches and players. The best player I have seen is Benjamin Asare, and he is the Black Stars’ first choice goalkeeper,” Schaefer said.
The Black Stars advisor stressed that while Ghanaian players in Europe often get the spotlight, the foundation of football in the country remains at home, in the local league.
“The heart of football in Ghana is in the local league, not only with players in Europe,” he added.
Schaefer also issued a call to action for home-based players, urging them to raise their performance levels if they hope to secure a call-up to the national team.
“I urge all players to work hard if they want to earn a call-up into the Black Stars,” he said.
