On May 9th, 2025, Accra Hearts of Oak released a statement to mark the 24th anniversary of the May 9th Stadium Disaster, which occurred on May 9, 2001, during a league match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

The statement is to reiterate the club's commitment to ensuring that similar tragedies never happen again by promoting safer practices and educating fans about responsible behavior at sporting events.

In 2001, 127 football fans tragically lost their lives during the league match between the two most glamorous Ghanaian clubs. The Accra Sports Stadium disaster is a significant event in Ghanaian football history, and it serves as a reminder of the need for improved safety measures and responsible crowd management in sporting venues.

Asante Kotoko posted on their social media handles in remembrance of the day: "24 years ago today, a thick dark cloud engulfed our country, not from flames but from the tragedy of losing 126 innocent lives to a stadium disaster. As we observe this day in grief, we will continue to mourn our fallen sons and daughters and forever stand against any form of violence at our match venues."

The Porcupine Warriors lost a staunch supporter in February this year during a league match against Nsoatreman FC.
