Ghana Premier League powerhouse Asante Kotoko SC have announced their long-awaited return to their home turf at Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
This development follows extensive renovations that had previously led to the stadium's closure for international football events.
The return is particularly important for the Porcupine Warriors as they navigate the current 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, during which they have been temporarily utilizing Obuasi’s Len Clay Stadium for their home matches.
The closure of Baba Yara Stadium was mandated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which deemed the venue unfit for international competition due to concerns regarding the quality of the playing surface.
In response to CAF’s feedback, substantial refurbishments were carried out to bring Baba Yara Stadium up to international standards. Throughout this period, Kotoko incurred additional financial strains by hosting matches at Obuasi.
Fortunately, a recent agreement between Asante Kotoko's management and the National Sports Authority (NSA) now allows the club to resume play at the newly renovated Baba Yara Stadium.
This transition not only provides the team with the reassurance and familiarity of their home ground but also serves as a crucial strategy to mitigate the operational costs associated with their temporary home in Obuasi.
Asante Kotoko’s first match back at Baba Yara Stadium will be against lower-tier side Future Stars on Sunday, December 1, 2024, during the round of 64 in the MTN FA Cup.
