Nations FC have claimed the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League top spot after a crucial home win over Great Olympics at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in Abrankese.

A 92nd-minute free-kick scored by Razak Simpson ensured Nations FC extended their unbeaten streak to four games against the Great Olympics in the match-week 24 fixture on Friday afternoon.

The Great Olympics could be found guilty of not making the numerous chances created count in the first half of the game, with Abdul Razak Yussif and Emmanuel Antwi firing wide.

Coach Jimmy Cobblah's side enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half, but they were wasteful upfront to make Nations FC concede in the first 45 minutes of the game.

Nations FC nearly snatched the lead through Blankson Nuamah, but he missed the target by a whisker on the stroke of halftime.

In the second half, the Nations FC technical team led by Kassim Mingle made a tactical substitution with the introduction of Richard Danso and Barimah Baah as replacements for Nafiu Sulemana and Blankson Nuamah.

The introduction of the duo helped the home team exert intense pressure on the back line of the Great Olympics, making them concede the late free-kick that resulted in the match-winner.

Defender Razak Simpson brilliantly snatched all three maximum points for Nations FC when he curled the free-kick into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Benjamin Asare crawling in his net.

Great Olympics were highly optimistic of leaving the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex with at least a draw after securing a 4-2 home win over Aduana Stars in match-week 24, but the remarkable free-kick effected by Razak Simpson dashed their hopes at the dying embers of the game.

Following the victory, Nations FC have leapfrogged FC Samartex on the league log with 43 points after 24 games.
