Hearts of Oak coach David Ocloo believes Richmond Ayi is still the best goalkeeper in his team, despite facing heavy criticism for conceding "cheap goals" against Medeama.
Ayi allowed Derrick Fordjour's fierce shot to bounce over him after it hit the ground in a 5-1 Ghana Premier League defeat with Medeama on Sunday and the young goalkeeper was lambasted by fans, who said he lacked good positioning and handling technique.
However his coach believes otherwise and has strongly jumped to the defence of the 25-year-old goalkeeper who in recent times has had a dip in form.
"Ayi dived to catch the ball, but unfortunately, the ball bounced after it hit the ground and took a different direction. So I can't blame him," Ocloo warned.
"If we had good pitches like Wembley, then we can boldly blame the goalkeeper for such a terrible mistake. No one should blame the goalkeeper for any of the goals."
Hearts of Oak, who sit eighth in the league standings, host eleventh-placed Legon Cities in their match-week 32 fixture at the El-Wak Sports Stadium on Sunday, May 28.
