Referees Manager of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alex Kotei, says the long-awaited introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the Ghana Premier League could soon be back on the table, thanks to improved broadcast quality under the league’s new media partner.
The GFA recently unveiled Adesa Production Limited (APL) as the official broadcast partner for the 2025/26 season, replacing the previous production team.
Speaking to Akoma FM, Kotei explained that poor broadcast standards had been the main obstacle to implementing VAR in previous seasons.
“We could not implement VAR in the past because the league’s broadcasting was not up to standard. For VAR to work effectively, you need excellent broadcasting,” he said.
He expressed confidence that APL’s enhanced coverage could set the stage for VAR trials in the near future.
“With the new broadcaster, we believe that in the coming matches we will then know whether to start using the VAR or not,” Kotei added.
The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season kicks off on September 12.
