Abdul Rahim Bashiru, Assistant Coach of Hearts of Oak, believes his team was well-positioned to clinch victory despite their defeat to Accra Lions in a heated clash.
In their matchday 28 encounter of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League, Hearts of Oak suffered a setback against their city rivals, Accra Lions, in a tightly contested affair.
Although the Phobians showed early promise, it was Accra Lions who capitalized on a counterattack in the 56th minute, with Ibrahim Issa breaking the deadlock and securing the lead for his team.
Reflecting on the game, Rahim Bashiru remarked, "That's football. We started so well. We were even supposed to finish the game in the first half. We had some decent chances but we couldn't take them."
"In the second half, we continued before they scored so to me, I can't tell you the reason why. I don't know. Whether we lost focus or what. We kept trying but they defended so well. Their goalkeeper did very well so we have to congratulate them," he added.
Despite the defeat, Hearts of Oak currently sit in 12th place with 35 points, just four points clear of the relegation zone. In contrast, Accra Lions ascend to third position in the league standings, highlighting the competitive nature of the league.
