The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has issued a statement expressing interest in Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, following his remarkable performances for the English club.
Mainoo, 18, secured a last-minute victory against Wolves on Thursday with a stunning solo goal, solidifying his status as a key player under manager Erik ten Hag this season.
The GFA, seeking to rebuild after a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign, sees Mainoo as a potential talisman. The Ghanaian national team exited the tournament in the group stages, leading to the dismissal of manager Chris Hughton.
Randy Abbey, a member of the executive council of the GFA, conveyed their interest in Mainoo and their desire to collaborate with him.
"The Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams. Kobbie is definitely one of such incredible talents, and the Association will love to work with him and many like him home and abroad," said Abbey.
Despite Ghana's efforts to sway Mainoo, the task may prove challenging, as the young midfielder has represented England at U17, U18, and U19 levels.
Gareth Southgate is reportedly keen to have Mainoo commit his future to the Three Lions, adding complexity to the international tug-of-war for his services.
Arsenal's midfielder, Thomas Partey, has suffered a setback in his return from a thigh injury, forcing him to miss the upcoming clash with Premier League rivals Liverpool.
The Ghanaian player has been sidelined since October, missing the last 20 games for Arsenal.
Despite recent optimism with his return to training, a recurrence of the injury has delayed Partey's comeback.
This setback is a significant blow for Arsenal, impacting their pursuit of the title as they currently trail league leaders Liverpool by five points.
Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed Partey's discomfort in the same thigh area, with the exact timeline for his return remaining uncertain.
“With Thomas, unfortunately we had a little setback a few days ago so he’s not going to be available to be in the squad. Whether it’s a matter of days or weeks, we will see, but he had a little thing.”
‘I’m not a doctor but I can try to explain. He felt something again in a very similar area and he wasn’t able to train for the last few days,’ the Arsenal head coach added.
