Laryea Kingston, former Ghanaian midfielder, asserts that Asamoah Gyan remains discontented over the circumstances surrounding his removal as captain, replaced by Andre Ayew, during his tenure with the national team.
Gyan, the highest goal scorer in the country's history, had his captaincy revoked just before the commencement of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, prompting him to consider boycotting the tournament.
Following the event, Gyan, who recently retired from football, did not feature in any matches for the national team.
According to Kingston, Gyan, now 37, felt compelled to relinquish his leadership role to Ayew, and this incident has led to a decline in his affection for the Black Stars.
"Look at someone like Asamoah Gyan, Dede Ayew got the captaincy by force so if you are speaking to Asamoah now he is not happy,” Kingston revealed to Graphic Sport.
“Personally, after enduring similar treatment for many years, I harbored resentment towards the Black Stars. However, recently, I made peace with it and decided to focus forward.”
Since assuming the captaincy of the national team, Ayew has guided the Black Stars through two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and a World Cup campaign.
