Port City FC returned to winning ways in the Ghana Premier League after edging Basake Holy Stars 1-0 at the Daasebre Boamah Darko II Park on Sunday to continue their impressive debut campaign in the top flight.
A moment of brilliance from forward Francis Gyetuah midway through the second half proved enough to separate the two sides, as Christopher Ennin's men climbed to third place on the league table with 18 points, just three behind leaders Medeama SC.
After a tightly contested opening hour, Gyetuah broke the deadlock in the 65th minute with a composed finish. The striker capitalised on a misplaced pass just outside the penalty area, outfoxed his marker with a clever dummy before calmly placing the ball beyond the goalkeeper to hand the hosts a deserved lead.
Port City nearly doubled their advantage moments later when Ransford Nartey found space inside the penalty area, but his close-range effort was brilliantly blocked as Basake Holy Stars fought to stay in the contest.
The visitors responded by increasing the pressure in search of an equaliser and came close in the 75th minute. Goalkeeper Daniel Amissah was called into action, producing an important punch to clear a dangerous free-kick and preserve his side's slender advantage.
Despite dominating possession during the closing stages, Basake Holy Stars were unable to breach Port City's well-organised defence, with the debutants producing another disciplined display to secure all three points.
The victory extends Port City's impressive home record and further strengthens their push for a top-four finish in their maiden Ghana Premier League season.
For Basake Holy Stars, the defeat was their third successive league loss, leaving the Anyinase-based club searching for answers after another frustrating afternoon in front of goal.
Holy Stars will now attempt to end their losing streak when they host Vision FC in their next league fixture, while the high-flying Port City travel to fellow newcomers Debibi United aiming to maintain their impressive momentum.
