Retired referee Alex Neequaye Kotey has revealed that the Ghana Premier League is set to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Lite, a less-costly alternative to the standard VAR system, due to financial challenges.

The VAR Lite setup will have fewer cameras and may pose a challenge, but it's seen as a stepping stone towards implementing the full VAR system.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the 2024 Ghana Football Awards, Kotey emphasized that the league is working hard to bring in the VAR Lite system, which is being introduced by FIFA.

He believes that the VAR Lite will provide a good foundation for the league's officiating, despite not having all the features of the full VAR system.

"We are working assiduously on that-providing VAR-we have not let it go. FIFA is trying to introduce a less-cost VAR which is the VAR Lite so when the VAR Lite comes, we will see how best we can bring it on because that one doesn't need a lot of cameras," Kotey said in an interview with Citisports.

“The only challenge there is that you don’t get some features in the VAR Lite as compared to the full VAR but of course it is just a stepping stone.”

The introduction of VAR Lite is expected to bring more accuracy and fairness to the Ghana Premier League, and Kotey believes it will be a positive step forward for the league's officiating.
