Asante Kotoko SC has strongly condemned the violent incidents that marred their Ghana Premier League Matchweek 19 clash against Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Koramansah Park.
In an official statement, the club revealed that their team was subjected to hostility from the moment they arrived at the stadium, including confrontations with home supporters. Despite the provocation, Asante Kotoko remained committed to fair play and completed the match.
However, the situation escalated during the game as missiles were thrown at the Kotoko bench on multiple occasions, creating a hazardous environment for players and officials. The chaos reached its peak when the club's Head of Media suffered a serious ear injury after being struck by an object.
Goalkeeper Mohammed Camara was also physically assaulted by fans who invaded the pitch, enduring both verbal abuse and missile attacks.
Adding to the tragedy, one of Kotoko's traveling supporters succumbed to injuries sustained during the violence. The club expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed its stance against hooliganism in football.
Media personnel and other supporters from Kumasi were also targeted, with the violent scenes resulting in extensive damage to Kotoko's equipment, including laptops, communication devices, and audiovisual gadgets. The club described this destruction as unacceptable, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced security measures at league venues.
Despite the severity of the incidents, Asante Kotoko completed the game, citing their commitment to the integrity of the competition. The club called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to investigate and ensure swift action against the perpetrators.
"Football must be played in a secure and fair environment, and these acts of violence must not be tolerated," the statement read. Kotoko urged stakeholders to prioritize the safety of players, officials, and supporters, reiterating their pursuit of professionalism and fair play.
The tragic events have cast a shadow over the Ghana Premier League, highlighting the ongoing issue of stadium security and the need for stronger enforcement to safeguard the sport.
