The Interim Management Committee (IMC) of Asante Kotoko is set to hold a crunchy emergency meeting on Monday afternoon to decide on the future of the club's technical team following the team's recent uninspiring performances in the ongoing Ghana Premier League season's campaign.
With two straight losses—a 3-0 loss to Accra Lions in a thrilling match and a 2-0 loss to Nations FC in Abrankese last weekend—the Porcupine Warriors' prospects of winning the 2024–25 league title have been dashed, bringing their winless skid to four games.
The supporters of Asante Kotoko have been putting a lot of pressure on head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, demanding that the former WAFA and Ebusua Dwarfs tactician leave the team immediately following the back-to-back losses in five days.
Sources at the club have confirmed that the IMC has decided to ask the 47-year-old trainer to step aside as the club's head coach, and the decision will be announced after today's meeting at the club's secretariat.
The IMC has identified former Ghana U17 and U20 coach Abdul Karim Zito as the potential replacement for Prosper Narteh Ogum to take charge for the remainder of the 2024/25 season with six games to end the campaign.
Zito, who doubles as the head coach and technical director of Dreams FC, has emerged as a frontrunner to be appointed as Asante Kotoko head coach. He has vast experience in the Ghana Premier League after handling several clubs, including Hearts of Oak, King Faisal, WAFA SC, B.A. Stars, and Medeama SC, among others.
The 65-year-old was a member of the Asante Kotoko's 1983 squad that won the club's last CAF Champions League trophy, and he will be making his second return to the club as gaffer after having a short stint as stopgap coach.
He guided Dreams FC to reach a historic semi-final stage of the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup.
Asante Kotoko has slipped to fourth place on the league log after failing to amass points in their last two Premier League matches. They will host Aduana Stars in the next matchday.
With 13 victories, 8 ties, and 7 losses this season, the team led by Ogum has scored 28 goals and given up 21 goals, averaging 1.68 points per game.
Asante Kotoko are still in the running for a trophy in the MTN FA Cup, where they will play Berekum Chelsea in the semi-finals, despite their league difficulties.
