Former Asante Kotoko board chairman Herbert Mensah has raised concerns about Ghana’s football direction after the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking to Luv FM, Mensah described the 2025 AFCON qualification failure as disappointing but suggested it may reflect a wider focus on the World Cup.
“Our failure to get through to AFCON was unfortunate. The fact that we’ve gone to the World Cup says maybe we were looking bigger in different things. I don’t think so, but maybe that was the kind of plan in terms of looking to go forward,” he said.
Mensah, who is also president of Rugby Africa, stopped short of saying Ghana deliberately shifted focus away from AFCON. However, he hinted at concerns over the team’s planning and decision-making.
His comments come as pressure grows on the Ghana Football Association and the Black Stars to deliver at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With the tournament approaching, attention is now on whether the team’s strategy will produce the results needed to justify their approach.
