Ghana international Francis Abu has successfully undergone surgery after suffering a serious injury during the Black Stars’ international friendly against Japan on Friday in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup.

The Toulouse midfielder sustained a double leg fracture early in the second half of Ghana’s 2-0 defeat. He was stretchered off in distressing fashion, prompting widespread concern from teammates, fans, and officials.

The 24-year-old has now completed surgery in Japan and has entered the initial phase of what is expected to be a lengthy rehabilitation. In an official statement, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed that the operation went well and outlined the medical and logistical support being provided to aid his recovery.

“Following the incident during the game between Ghana and Japan, where Abu Francis suffered a fracture of two bones, the Ghana Football Association, through the efforts of Dr. Prince Pambo, Black Stars head of medical, his colleagues from Toulouse FC, and the surgical team in Japan, is happy to inform the public that Francis Abu has successfully undergone surgery, and the acute phase of his rehabilitation has commenced,”
the GFA announced.

The statement also revealed that a physiotherapist has been assigned to stay with Abu to oversee his early rehabilitation. Additionally, arrangements are being finalized for a senior technical team member to accompany him back to France once he is discharged from the Toyota Memorial Hospital, where the surgery was performed.

“The Ghana Football Association is grateful to everyone who supported us in this journey,” the GFA added. “We are particularly grateful to the Black Stars management and the technical team for their support during these last few days and will continue to count on their support during the rehabilitation process in our quest to ensure that the player returns to full fitness.”

Francis Abu, regarded as one of Ghana’s brightest young midfielders, will now focus on his recovery. Both Toulouse and the Black Stars remain hopeful that he will return stronger once his rehabilitation is complete.
